Funding Opportunity

WCAHS is dedicated to improving the health and safety of those working in western agriculture through multidisciplinary research, education, and community trainings. The overarching goal of the WCAHS Outreach and Education Grant is to expand and enhance the topical and regional reach of WCAHS and facilitate stronger collaboration between Cooperative Extension personnel, academic and private educators, and WCAHS.

WCAHS is seeking outreach and education proposals that address agricultural health and safety in Arizona, California, Hawaii, and/or Nevada. WCAHS welcomes applications on subjects spanning core agricultural health and safety topics (e.g., heat illness prevention, sexual harassment, pesticides, ag equipment and operation) as well as emerging or underserved topics (e.g., farmworker mental health issues and resources, non-English and non-Spanish language safety resources). We welcome all ideas that are relevant to agricultural health and safety.

Projects with strong connections to agricultural stakeholders are preferred. Such connections are best demonstrated by inclusion of a cooperative extension specialist or farm advisor as part of the project team or partnership with an agricultural employer, farmworker advocacy group, or commodity board. Examples of successful proposals include, but are not limited to, educational safety materials, new training courses, needs assessments, and health fairs or events.

Funding length: up to 4 months
Funding requests up to $10,000; most awards will be $3,000–$10,000

Required Proposal Items

Abstract written for lay audience	<150 words
Project narrative: Background Project goals Significance Approach Evaluation plan (An evaluation or assessment plan that, at minimum, tracks attendance/viewership, solicits stakeholder feedback on content clarity, and, if possible, gauges audience understanding before and after the outreach effort.) Plan to engage WCAHS	3 pages
Budget: Personnel, supplies, and domestic travel allowed Award limit is for total costs (direct + indirect) UC Davis does not have an indirect limit	1 page
Budget justification	1-2 pages
Resume or CV for project lead	up to 3 pages
Statement on project feasibility should public health officials mandate quarantine or continued social distancing related to COVID-19	<1 page

Review Criteria

The review process emphasizes outreach impact, namely, 1) the identification of a significant health and/or safety problem that may be related to agricultural sources; 2) the magnitude of the health and/or safety problem; 3) innovation and use of appropriate tools and methodologies to address the question; and 4) fit with WCAHS’ goals.

All awardees will be expected to engage WCAHS in at least one meeting during the project period to discuss approach and material development. All materials developed during the project (e.g., radio clips, videos, training materials) must be reviewed and approved by WCAHS, include the WCAHS logo, and be provided for inclusion on the WCAHS website. Awardees will be expected to participate in WCAHS events and seminars. WCAHS must be acknowledged in publications and presentations by National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) grant title and number.
